Mingjia Liu

  Principal oboist of the San Francisco Opera

  Born in Qingdao, China in 1988 and started playing the oboe at the age of nine. He graduated as the top of his class from the Middle School of Central Conservatory of Music, under oboe professor Weidong Wei (China National Symphony Orchestra). He received both of his Performance and Artist Diplomas from Oberlin Conservatory of Music where he studied with Robert Walters (The Cleveland Orchestra) and Alex Klein (Former Principal Oboist of Chicago Symphony Orchestra).

  He was a fellowship recipient of Aspen Music Festival and Colorado College Music Festival where he performed Mozart C Major oboe concerto as the soloist and worked with Richard Woodhams(Philadelphia orchestra), Elaine Douvas(Metropolitan opera), Jonathon fischer(San Francisco Symphony)  and Scoot Yoo(Music Director of the Festival Mozaic).

  He also was a finalist in auditions for the principal oboe of the Seattle Symphony Orchestra, Pacific Symphony Orchestra, Grant Park Music Festival and Marlboro Music Festival.

  Served as principal oboist with Kansas City Symphony Orchestra for 2009-2010 season. where He performed many oboe heavy symphonic works such as Ravel-“Le Tombeau de Couperin”, “Stravinsky-Pulcinella”, Rossini-“La scala di Seta”, Barber-Violin concerto, etc. and gain many excellent reviews.

  Mingjia Liu is now the youngest principal oboist of all the professional orchestras in U.S.A.
