Sound of Nature --the 1st International Sanxian Music Festival Unveiled in CCOM

The 1st International Sanxian Music Festival is being conducted by the Central Conservatory of Music from Nov. 10th to 13th. The opening ceremony concert on the evening of Nov. 10th, "Tian Yun [Sound of Nature]," presented unprecedented "sound of sanxian" to the audiences and shocked their auditory sense. the concert was consisted of nine compositions in various styles, which included traditional pieces Songqing Yeyou and Fengyu Tiema; contemporary pieces with western skills, Queqi and Jingyun Youyou [Long-standing Beijing Music]; arranged pieces from traditional repertories, Xingjie and Sanfan; contemporary piece in traditional style, Shamo zhi Lu [Journey through the Desert]; contemporary pieces combining with Chinese and Western elements, Yinzi yu Fuge [Introduction and Fugue] and Shuobian; and Tian Yun [Sound of Nature] composed for traditional percussions and sanxian. The nine works contributed an audio feast brought by sanxian, an ancient instrument with modern charm, to the audiences. They experienced different eras and spaces from ancient to modern time, from elegant to popular styles, from Chinese to Western elements during the one and a half hours concert. Professor Tan Longjian, the artistic director and one of the planers of the 1st International Sanxian Music Festival, said that "the purpose of sanxian concerts is to break down the formulary about sanxian music in people's mind."

"Tian Yun" concert is the first event of the festival. It represents the development and tendencies of sanxian music in Chinese music conservatories. Later, we will present another two concerts: "Xian Yun [Sound of Strings]," a Chinese folk music concert of sanxian; and "Ya Yun [Sound of Elegance]," a Japanese samisen concert. The three concerts, as three strings on sanxian, present the classic elegance of tradition, the simple and nature of folk art, and the prospects for the future of sanxian music. Although this year is the first international sanxian music festival, sanxian, a traditional instrument, has displayed its mature artistic charm due to the profound historical culture it carries. We believe that we can experience more irresistible charm of sanxian music in the following concerts and sanxian music festivals.
