Introduction:

1. Mark Summerville Pito (film)

Naked twins awaken out of hibernation.
Crouched atop ancient tree trunks the twins are connected by a thick dread of hair.

Pito builds on Taane Mete and Taiaroa Royal’s heritage as Maori men and Auckland drag queens. The film explores the awakening movement of ancient twins and connects their primitive energy to the survivor instinct of the Street Queen. Working with the initial image inspired by the choreographer Douglas Wright, Summerville, Royal and Mete began a workshop process that saw the film move into a mythical Maori world.

A desolate, foreboding, landscape sets the scene for the genesis.

Pito, the film, is the first act of a larger dance work TAMA MA by Taiaroa Royal and Taane Mete. The film was produced with funding from the Creative New Zealand Screen Innovation Fund in association with the New Zealand Film Commission.

2. Douglas Lilburn (1915-2001): Prelude 1951 (piano)
with Janine Randerson (b. 1991): Topologies (2009) (video)

Douglas Lilburn’s Prelude 1951 is a small, delicate work for piano and is included in this programme as a tribute to the ‘founding father’ of New Zealand composition. Lilburn’s influence as a composer and as a teacher has been profound. He established the first electronic music studio in 1966.

Topologies s a digital video record of four days of weather and maritime conditions over the period of an artist residency in at Mimiwhangata, Northland, New Zealand. The linear framing of this shot was a topographic drawing of a rocky outcrop. Weather from the morning and evening of each day is represented by a horizontal slice of video, based on the framing of the rocky headland in the topographic drawing. The daily layers of weather are animated simultaneously to dissolve in vertical striations across the screen.

Janine Randerson is a New Zealand media artist and a PhD researcher at the University of Melbourne. Her art practice includes site-specific, spatial installations, 16mm films, digital audio and single-channel, experimental video. A recurrent theme in her work is technological mediation in ecological systems with a particular focus on meteorology and climate change. Currently she is on the 'Lovely Weather' guest editorial panel of a special issue of MIT’s Leonardo Journal.

3. David Downes (b.1967): Noise (video)

Conceptually linked to Len Lye's sound- generating kinetic sculptures, Noise is short, highly concentrated and superbly crafted multimedia work subtitled 'theme and variations'. Both images and sounds in Noise were created as an inseparable whole by the composer, resulting in a remarkably unity of vision and sound.

David Downes is a Wellington-based composer who has pursued an individual path of creative musical work, most of it using electronic technology and frequently linked with dance. He has also worked with other composers and a number of notable performers, and has won acclaim internationally as a film maker. David’s work draws its main influence from popular music but is strengthened by several years of classical piano training and a graduate degree in music composition. It shares a common ground of solid, often complex, rhythmic structures.

4. Helen Bowater Hoshi No Hayashi (solo soprano) 2003
with Janine Randerson: Rorschach Clouds (2007) (video)

The anonymous text of Hoshi No Hayashi “Forest of Stars” is from the Man'yoshu "The Collection of Ten Thousand Leaves", Japan's first anthology of poetry, 8th century A.D. Translated from Kanji by Kazu Nakagawa, the words are sung in Japanese.

ame no umi ni    In the sea of heaven
kumo no nami tachi   waves of cloud rise
tuki no tune        I can see
hoshi no hayashi ni   the moonship disappearing
kogi kakuru miyu   as it is rowed into the forest of stars

Rorschach Clouds observes the meteorological phenomena described as 'Surface observation of a single cell cumulonimbus'. The decay of a single cell cumulonimbus cloud is rapid and seldom exists for more than half an hour. The audio texture for this piece is sourced from sonified data from a scientific weather station which measures the CO2 emissions from a mining site in the central North Island. Original music is by Jason Johnston.

Helen Bowater graduated BMus (Hons) in music history and ethnomusicology from Victoria University of Wellington in 1982. She later studied composition with Jack Body and electroacoustic music with Ross Harris. She has been active in various choirs and ensembles as a singer, pianist and violinist, also in the Victoria University Gamelan Padhang Moncar and in rock bands pHonk and the Extra Virgin Orchestra. Many of Helen’s solo, ensemble and orchestral works have been performed in concert and on radio and several published.

5. John Rimmer (b.1939): For the Kokako (with recorded birdsong)

from the painting Last Flight of the Kokako by Don Binney

One of the most beautiful sounds of the New Zealand forest is the clear, bell-like call of the Kokako. The first and last pieces in this set of five piano pieces develop various melodic ideas of this call while the remaining pieces suggest different flight patterns and human encroachment on the habitat of this endangered bird. For the Kokako was inspired by the painting by the well-known New Zealand artist Don Binney entitled the Last Flight of the Kokako.

John Rimmer studied composition at the University of Auckland and later at the University of Toronto. John Rimmer taught at the School of Music, University of Auckland before retiring in 1999. His works have been performed internationally and he has received commissions from orchestras and chamber ensembles in New Zealand and from overseas groups. Most of John Rimmer’s recent compositions are environmentally inspired and as such are a protest about the damage to the Earth's environment by contemporary societies.   Living close to nature he listens to the world around him including its inhabitants and draws on many types of sounds with which to develop personal musical explorations.

7. Megan Collins (b. 1971): Mata (2009)

Mata is a collaboration between performer/composers Horomona Horo and Megan Collins; a duet between the music of two oral traditions, Maori (Aotearoa/New Zealand) and Minangkabau (West Sumatra, Indonesia). The instruments are linked by their use in story- telling. Mata means ‘eyes’ in both Maori and Minanagkabau. The composition is an opening of the eyes, a meeting, a doorway, a new story, as the performers look into each other’s culture.

Megan Collin has been strongly influenced by the music of Indonesia since first visiting that country in 1993. As an ethnomusicologist she has studied the music, dance and theatre of the Minangkabau people from West Sumatra As a composer Megan has absorbed the traditions of the Minangkabau people and incorporated their musical aesthetics and expressions into her compositions. She has played Javanese gamelan for many years and has composed several compositions using these instruments.

8. Kurt Adams (b.1980): White drawing 2009 (video)

White Drawing depicts a landscape laden with smudged skies, scribbled weeds and dirty horizons; unnaturally absent of figure yet burdened with the everyday furniture of over choice and apathy. With the camera continually falling into the unfolding future we recognise an overly manipulated and manicured environment, perhaps as a passenger we might consider the consequences of our decisions and even a fleeting moment of guilt.
