Central Conservatory of Music 70th Anniversary Celebration Announcement (No.1)

On November 1st, 2010, Central Conservatory of Music is approaching its 70th anniversary. We would like to extend our sincere thanks and heartfelt tribute to the leaders at all levels, alumni and friends from home and abroad who have been offering assistance and support to the construction and development of the Central Conservatory of Music.

Founded in June 1950, the Central Conservatory of Music is merged together with Music Department of the Yenching University in 1920s, the Music Department of the Literature and Art School of the North China University in 1930s, the National Academy of Music in Nanjing, the Music Department of the National Peiping School of Arts, China Academy of Music in Shanghai and in Hong Kong, and the Music Department of the Northeast Lu Hsun Institute of Literature and Art in 1940s. However, the history of CCOM should track back to the National Conservatory of Music founded in Chongqing in November 1940, which is the main predecessor of CCOM and has a history of seventy years up to now. Moved from Tianjin to Beijing in 1958, the Central Conservatory of Music is located at the former Prince Chun's Residence of Qing Dynasty (Emperor Kuang Hsu's birthplace). CCOM was ranked among the national leading universities in 1960. It was affiliated to the Ministry of Culture, and has supervised directly under the Ministry of Education of the State Council since 2000. Currently, it was listed as one of the leading universities in the "211 project" in 1999, the only key institution of higher learning and "211 project" school among all academies of arts in China.

As an institution of single discipline for training high level musical specialists in higher learning, the Central Conservatory of Music has evolved a complete system of pedagogy embracing courses of all levels starting from elementary classes up to postgraduate programs for master and doctoral degrees. It has become a worldwide renowned music conservatory integrating music education, performance, composition, academic research, publishing, and music education in community into a whole. After the joint efforts of the successive leaders and the staff and faculty members, the Central Conservatory of Music has cultivated numerous music talents with international view, innovative spirit, and strong practical ability, and made remarkable achievements. The school has achieved good reputation and made a large influence on the international community during the seventy years.

The 70th Anniversary is an important milestone in the history of development of the Central Conservatory of music. It is hereby announced that the school will hold a celebration event based on the principles of frugality, solemnness, and pragmatism. We started preparatory works for the 70th anniversary celebration, including the collection of archives, the planning of Summit of Deans and Presidents from top music conservatories worldwide, organizing the 70th anniversary celebration ceremony, performances and lectures series, campus construction, as well as financing for development, etc. During the anniversary celebration, we sincerely look forward to your presences and to gathering all staff and alumni at home and abroad for his alma mater.
