Review of Seven Years’ Practice of the Accordion Major in Central Conservatory of Music

The year of 2011 is the seventh anniversary for the establishment of the accordion major of Central Conservatory of Music.

During the “ninth five-year plan” period, in order to meet challenges of the world’s new technology revolution, facing the 21st century, China determined and implemented the “211 Project”, which is aimed at primarily establishing about 100 institutions of higher education and a number of key subjects and majors throughout the country by installments. In order to fulfill this project completely, to establish new majors continuously and to develop into a world class institution, Central Conservatory of Music began to attract more scholars successively, who have gained excellent achievements overseas and have certain influences, to return to China and teach here so as to enrich the teaching of school subjects and enhance its teaching strength continuously, which can help upgrade the school’s quality of education and international status in an overall manner.

Under this background, Professor Cao Xiaoqing, who is the first Chinese accordionist that has won the first place in a significant international accordion competition and was a professor of Hanover University for Music and Drama, Germany at that time, abandoned the well-paid job abroad and returned to China resolutely.  He is now the deputy director of the Piano Department of Central Conservatory of Music. With the substantial support from the school, Professor Cao established the accordion major (undergraduate course) in Central Conservatory of Music in 2004, filling the gap of the school’s 70 years of history without the accordion major. Subsequently, in 2005 he set up the accordion major in the Music School attached to Central Conservatory of Music.

The establishment of the accordion major in Central Conservatory of Music not only has filled the gap of this major since the foundation of the school, which makes the highest music institute in China have owned the accordion major ever since, but also makes the subjects of the conservatory more diversified and scientific. It is a significant breakthrough in the field of academic study in the development of the accordion major in China. Meanwhile, the long-cherished wish for which the Chinese old generation accordion educators have made great efforts for many years has been realized. It has also laid a solid foundation for the accordion major to develop soundly in China for the future.

During the past seven years, with selfless professional dedication and in tireless pursuit of the accordion career and art, Professor Cao Xiaoqing has brought up a number of young accordion talents for our country who have great influences both at home and abroad. In the meantime, upholding the principle of combining teaching and practice, he has formulated a teaching program which covers different stages from the attached middle school to the undergraduate and the graduate and integrates with the international accordion teaching methods. A whole set of scientific and rigorous accordion teaching system has been formed and the regular teaching work of the accordion major has basically achieved systematization, standardization and institutionalization.

For the past seven years, Professor Cao Xiaoqing has also tested the teaching results by leading his students to participate in major international and domestic competitions as well as the music practical activities constantly so as to perfect and enrich the teaching system. By Oct 2011, students of the accordion major in Central Conservatory of Music had totally won 153 important prizes (the first three places) in the top competitions home and abroad, among which 67 are the first places and 24 have been won for the first time by Chinese accordion players in the first-class international art competitions chosen by the Chinese Ministry of Culture. Professor Cao has been awarded the excellent instructor prize by the organizing committee for many times. Totally, 274 various music practical activities have been held, which has achieved good results and caused strong echo both in the conservatory and the society. Thus it has opened a new chapter in the prosperous development of the Chinese accordion career!

In the past seven years, the teaching experience and achievements of the accordion major of Central Conservatory of Music have drawn close attention of the international accordion circle. Therefore, Professor Cao Xiaoqing has been invited to give recitals, chamber music concerts and lectures in Germany, Italy, France, Austria, Spain, Switzerland, Denmark, Yugoslavia etc. He has also been invited to serve as a judge in the major international accordion competitions which are held in Klingenthal (Germany, first-class international art competition), Castelfidardo (Italy, first-class international art competition), Moscow (Russia), Arrecife (Spain) and Abufeila (Portugal) etc. as well as in various domestic accordion competitions, in which he is highly appraised by different circles.
